A Dublin scientist who studies creepy crawlies has been hired as the latest brain box on the hit quiz show The Chase.

Darragh Ennis, 40, is currently a postdoctoral researcher at Oxford University, where he primarily studies the brains of insects.

Before joining the Ilann David laboratory in 2013, he worked at Concordia University in Montreal.

The researcher’s Twitter bio, which now boasts of his new Chaser status, says: “I do science and occasionally quizzes.”

Darragh is the first addition to the Chaser team since Jenny ‘The Vixen’ Ryan joined the show in 2015 and he joins a stellar cast including The Beast, The Dark Destroyer and The Vixen.

Darragh took part in the show as a contestant back in 2017, however, he lost money when he was let down by the rest of his team.

He is now back on the show as a Chaser and this Irishman says this time he means business.

“I don’t get nerves,” he said.

“It’s definitely a lot more comforting being a contestant as you’re on a team.

“Not much is expected of you.

“So if you lose to one of the best quizzers in the country, it’s not a big deal.

“But everybody kind of expects you to win when you’re the Chaser.

“It’s a lot more pressure on that side, but it doesn’t bother me, I don’t get nervous.”

All Chasers have been given nickname and Darragh is no different.

He has been christened "The Menace" by host Bradley Walsh and says he can’t wait for people to see his new Wild West look.

““I really like it actually.

“I didn’t know my ‘The Menace’ name until I walked out on set. I like it, it’s good.

“I can’t wait for the merchandise.

“I had originally said that I genuinely didn’t care about the costume and that I would come out in a chicken suit if they wanted to – which I think they were tempted to do for a moment in time.

“They played around with a few different things.

“The tie is a bolo tie, a kind of Wild West thing.

“They found this really cool paisley material for the jacket - I really like the jacket.”

The Chase airs today at 2pm on Virgin Media One
