Phuket: Life through a cleanse
When people talk to me about ‘life-changing’ experiences, I usually smile and scoff a little bit to myself – in a loving way, of course
Then came the realisation that I was about to enter my fifth decade (I’m still not comfortable with the big 4-0 tag), and the thought that I needed a holiday with a difference.
The Clodagh in her 20s and 30s would have associated Thailand with all-night parties and death-defying adventure activities – but the Clodagh in her… ahem… 40s sought something different from the Asian hotspot.
After what seemed like endless Google searches, several discussions with pals and one slightly impulsive decision, myself and my bestie, Andrea, booked ourselves into Phuket Cleanse on the southern tip of the island of Phuket.
From the moment we arrived, we knew this would be unlike any holiday we’ve ever been on. Both of us approached this trip with different mindsets. I was on a mission to sort out my bad eating habits and lose some weight before my birthday celebrations. Andrea was there more for moral support, after I bribed her with the promise of a week of luxury pampering.
It was definitely a different take on our many previous long-distance holidays – but our seven-day sojourn delivered so much more than we could have imagined.
We were welcomed by the friendliest team of people I have ever come across and were instantly made to feel right at home.
The best thing about Phuket Cleanse is that it manages to combine so many different styles of holidays – fitness camp, holistic retreat and health escape. It can also be a fun place, or just a place to top up your tan in the stunning surroundings.
On arrival, you will have your body composition assessment with personal trainer Eli. According to your goals (fat loss/muscle gain), Eli will
create a personalised fitness and nutrition program that will be reviewed weekly.
The daily schedule is packed with activities and there’s plenty to choose from to suit your individual needs and interests.
One minute you’ll be heading for a Muay Thai boxing class, the next you’ll be taking the plunge in an ice bath before enjoying a relaxing yoga session.
It was a fantastic motivational tool to see our fitness levels change daily. On our first day, I thought I was going to have a heart attack
after a Muay Thai class, which left me floored.
A few days later, I was up at 5.30am for a 4km hike up a very steep hill to see the sunrise near the Big Buddha – something which would have felt impossible on my first day.
This was followed by stand-up paddle boarding – where I balanced like a pro, despite my fear of the water. I finished the day training with professional Russian Muay Thai boxer, Oleg, who commended the technique of my roundhouse kick. I also made use of the resort’s infrared therapy to aid muscle recovery.
Outside of training, every meal was an experience in itself. Replacing meat sweats for ‘musheroni’ (mushrooms that tasted like pepperoni), we ate the most amazing vegan food that left our mouths watering for more.
Eating in a communal area meant we got to talk to everyone about their day and find out how they’d gotten on with their own classes. I found this really inspiring.
It’s not all about physical changes, though. On any given day you can take part in meditations, Reiki shares, dives, chakra readings, quantum jumps, and so much more to get your holistic health in shape.
Having always liked the idea of trying Reiki, but having never quite found the time, this was the perfect opportunity for me to discover my spiritual side.
I booked in for a session with a Reiki master, Venus, who took me on a wild, spiritual journey. It made me smile from the inside out, and afterwards I slept like a baby.
Phuket Cleanse’s all inclusive program has everything you need – airport transfers, accommodation, food, juice fast (optional), fitness, yoga, meditation, workshops, massages, boat trips – you get the picture. You won’t even need to spend another cent, unless you opt for extra services such as Reiki, physio or blood work.
There are three different rooms to choose from – supreme, superior and standards. We opted for their standard room as it was the best option for sharing.
At the end of our week, my only regret was not staying longer. I would have definitely enjoyed five more days in this wonderful place where each day you feel leaner, fitter and healthier than the last.
A holiday should leave you rested, refreshed and rejuvenated. Never has this been more true than my current post-holiday feeling.
I came home with love of fresh vegetables and a passion for exercising. But above all, I came home feeling like my best self which really was the best birthday present that
I could have ever given to myself.
