AN Irish tarmacking crew were stopped by Spanish police last week after complaints from local residents and one man arrested.

The group of Irish and Polish nationals were reported to police in Lorca city in the south-east of the country as they called to people offering to do tarmac work.

The group of ten were travelling in two cars and an Irish registered truck, it was reported by La Actualidad.

The councillor for Citizen Security of the Lorca City Council, José Luis Ruiz Guillén, said the police action happned after “several residents of the district of La Paca notified the local police, through WhatsApp groups, of the presence of several people who were offering asphalting jobs, some of which were traveling in a vehicle with a foreign license plate.”

Police suspected a false insurance document was being used for the truck which was seized and was later found to be using illegal diesel.

A local official explained that the driver could now face a €12,000 fine for the offences.

A municipal official explained that some members of the group had previously been identified as being involved in the same activity.

He told La Actualidad how they will offer a tarmac job at low price but often disappear when an advance fee is paid.

In other cases they will do a job with poor materials and use pressure and intimidation to extort a higher than agreed price.

Local police units were praised for their work in preventing any scams being carried out.
