Police in Senegal are said to be baffled by the murder of an elderly Irishman in a seaside resort town in the African nation whose body was discovered in his bed with his hands and feet bound.

The identity of the man has not been revealed but local cops in Saly Niakhniakhal have confirmed he was Irish and in his 60s.

The Department of Foreign Affairs is aware of the case and a spokesman said they “stand ready to provide consular assistance as appropriate and necessary”.

The victim, whose body has been pictured lying on the road with just a white sheet covering it, is believed to have been a resident of the seaside town, which is a popular tourist resort.

Cops are said to be puzzled by the man’s murder as valuables were left in the room.

However, Senegalese cops said a security guard where the man’s remains were found was arrested on suspicion of being involved in his murder.

He was being questioned in a local police station overnight.

“The killer or killers only took the man’s mobile phone and nothing else,” one local said.

“He was found tied up on the bed in his room in a house in the town, but it appears there were other valuables there that were not taken.”

According to one local newspaper, “a murder case is in the headlines in Saly”.

“An Irishman in his sixties was found dead in his room in Saly Niakh Niakhal, it was reported (on Thursday morning),” it reports. “The man was found tied up with his feet and hands. But the attackers did not take any valuables except the cell phone. The guard at the house was arrested for the purposes of the investigation by Saly police.

The town, which has a population of just over 20,000 and is popular with western tourists, was shocked by the murder of a French man in the area at the start of the year.

The 75-year-old had been murdered by a gang of men who broke into his house to steal his car.
