A man considered to be the Netherland’s most wanted assassin, Gerel Lusiano Palm, has been finally tracked down and arrested in Brazil.

The 38-year-old who Dutch authorities had been searching for, for years, was arrested by federal police on Wednesday morning in an apartment in Barra da Tijuca, a western part of Rio de Janeiro.

Palm was convicted in absentia in Den Bosch in January 2021 for a double attempted murder in Noordeloos in 2016, and for illegal possession of weapons.

Palm was on Interpol's public wanting list. According to Brazilian media, Palm was also wanted by the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

He been on the run for nearly three years after escaping from jail in Paramaribo, Suriname, in March 2017.

He disarmed a guard and made his way to the exit holding him at gunpoint on only his 12th day in prison before fleeing in a Toyota Mark X that was waiting for him in front of the entrance

Palm has been linked to career-criminal and gang leader Ridouan Taghi and is suspected of numerous crimes throughout the years.

The gang led by Taghi (43), a Dutch-Moroccan organised-crime boss, are believed to be behind the attempted murder the high-profile Dutch crime journalist Peter R de Vries in Amsterdam.

Taghi is an alleged associate of Daniel Kinahan and was reportedly a guest at his wedding.

He is currently in custody and on trial with 16 of his associates, who face accusations relating to six gangland murders in the Netherlands as well as drugs trafficking charges.

In 2019, Taghi made a public statement denying reports he had threatened to have Mr de Vries killed.

Palm has been arrested multiple times and served several prison sentences before, including a nine-year stretch after a drug-related revenge shooting in 2001.

Police have also connected Palm to the murder of shop employee Ronald Bakker in the Dutch city of Huizen in 2015 which was believed to have been organised by Taghi.

In this case, Palm was released days after being arrested due to lack of evidence.

It was after this release that Palm decided to move to Suriname, a former Dutch colony in South America.

Palm was suspected of both of these crimes and was soon tracked down and arrested, but only remained in jail for less than two weeks before he escaped.
