A top German prosecutor has vowed to fight for justice for an Irish woman who was brutally raped in Portugal in 2004.

Hans-Christian Wolters said it will probably just take a little bit more time before he solves the horrific attack on holiday rep Hazel Behan and that German sex fiend Christian Bruckner who is the chief suspect in Madeleine McCann's disappearance is in the frame.

In an interview with the Spanish based Olive Press English paper, Mr Wolter confirmed the convicted German rapist is a suspect in five different separate crimes.

He is currently serving a seven-year sentence for the rape of a 72-year-old American woman in Praia da Luz, Portugal in 2005.

But he is likely to charge him with Hazel's rape and another serious crime prior to the kidnapping of little Maddie.

Hazel was raped a year before the American woman was attacked, at her flat in Praia da Rocha, about 30 minutes away from the holiday village where Maddie went missing in 2007.

Mr Wolters revealed his 100-strong team of detectives had received over 1,000 new pieces of information over the Maddie case since his international public appeal a year ago.

Some of it was new and very good.

The five specific cases include the rape of Hazel plus the abuse of children in a playpark on the Algarve in 2017.

He said: "The probe into the Behan case is likely to take a few more months while the case of Maddie and the two separate cases of child abuse might take longer.

"We only have Chrsitian B as a suspect in the Behan case. However some information is missing which we are in the process of pulling together.

"We are working with the Irish and the Portugese authorities and it is taking a bit of time to get all the information we need.

"Once we have it all, we will close the case. It will continue for a few more months but not three months as was previously reported."

Hazel, who is originally from Dublin, was only 20 when she was brutally attacked 17 years ago.

When she heard the details of the rape of the American woman, she got sick as she realised it was a carbon copy of what happened to her.

The attacker was German, 6ft 1in, carried a 12-inch machete and was wearing tights.

She contacted the police and waived her anonymity to tell the whole country of her ordeal when she appeared with Ryan Tubridy on The Late Late Show in 2015.

The whole world is waiting to find out what happened to Maddie McCann.

But Woltors insisted it will probably be the end of this year before he solves her case.
