Spanish police have dismantled a network of fraudsters in the Canary Islands who scammed tourists out of more than €70,000.

The scammers – a group of eight people – pretended to be an agency offering false holiday villas to families in Fuerteventura after stealing photos from other rentals and offering them as their own.

At least 60 people have fallen victim to these scams, with the total amount of money conned amounts to approximately €70,000.

Two of the eight con artists have been arrested by the Spanish Civil Guard, while the remaining six are currently under investigation.

The investigation began at the end of July when the Civil Guard began to receive an influx of complaints from people who had reserved vacation rental villas through the fraudulent website.

When the keen travellers arrived at the properties they had reserved, they found the villas already occupied by guests who had rented them from legitimate hosts.

In many cases, these people were left without accommodation for their stay.

The proceedings have been made available to the Puerto del Rosario Investigating Court, which is hearing the case.

The Civil Guard have reminded people to look out for similar scams by being “wary of advertisements in which the rental price is disproportionately low,” checking reviews from previous renters, and only making reservations on “platforms of known legitimacy.”
