SPANISH police arrested a fugitive Irishman after he touched down at Tenerife Airport and found he was carrying 35 grams of ecstasy.

The 26-year-old was held on an arrest warrant issued by a court in Ibiza after flying to the popular holiday destination from Dublin.

Officers found the ecstasy on him during a search at a nearby police station and rearrested him.

Police said Wednesday he would now appear in court so a judge could decide his immediate future.

It is not yet clear if he will be dealt with first for the alleged Tenerife drugs offence or flown back to Ibiza where police said he was also wanted over a drugs crime.

A spokesman for Spain’s National Police in Tenerife confirmed: “Officers have arrested a 26-year-old Irishman on suspicion of a drugs-related crime after he was found to be carrying 35 grams of ecstasy in his belongings.

“He was identified at border control after stepping off a flight from Dublin and arrested after it was discovered he was wanted by a court in Ibiza over a drug-related offence.

“The 35 grams of ecstasy were found during a search at a nearby police station where he was taken after his initial detention and he was re-arrested.

“Police also confiscated €2,400 he was carrying.”

Court officials on the island could not be reached early on Wednesday morning to confirm whether he had already appeared before a judge in a behind-closed-doors hearing.

No details have yet been released about the charges he is facing in Ibiza.

On Wednesday police on the Costa Blanca said they had arrested three British nationals accused of sending drugs to Ireland by courier.

The trio were held in Rojales near the resort of Torrevieja after detectives were tipped off about the tell-tale smell of cannabis coming from a parcel due to be taken abroad.
