The son of a leading loyalist was shot in the leg yesterday by a UDA punishment team.

The Sunday World can reveal the man who is in his 20’s was shot by appointment by the paramilitary group.

The young man was accused of dealing drugs and expelled from Coleraine.

The identity of both men is known to Sunday World but we are prevented from naming them at this stage for legal reasons.

The victim was shot once but sources say his injuries were minor and he suffered a “graze” to the calf area.

“He got off lightly obviously because of who his father was," a source said.

"They (the UDA) had to be seen doing something but it really was for show. It brought back memories of when Johnny Adair ordered a punishment attack on his son Mad Dog,” a source said.

Police in Derry are now appealing for information relating to the incident that happened in a wooded area off the Lisnablagh Road in Coleraine.

The PSNI are appealing to anyone who has information about the incident to come forward.

In a statement, the police said: "Detectives in Coleraine are appealing for information following the report of a shooting incident in which a man sustained an injury to his leg on Thursday March 3.

"It was reported at 9pm on Thursday evening that a man, aged in his 20s, had been taken to a wooded area off the Lisnablagh Road in Coleraine, held down by a number of men wearing balaclavas and shot once in his leg.
