Two young teenagers were slashed, stabbed and beaten with hammers in an attack outside a chip shop in the East Wall area of Dublin last night.

The two 16-year-olds were treated at the Mater Hospital after a group of up to 15 teens and young men, many on bicycles, arrived at the fast food outlet at 8pm and targeted them.

One of the injured youths is from Ballyfermot, while the second boy is from the local East Wall area.

Bloodstains could be seen on the footpath outside the chip shop today after one of the boys received lacerations to his head and hand, and the second youth was stabbed in the chest and received head injuries.

It is not believed that their injuries are life-threatening, but the hammer and knife attack has shocked locals who were today calling for more Garda patrols in the area.

"I hear it was bedlam down here last night,” said one local woman. “There was lads on bikes flying in and out of the street and a lot of fear. We need more gardaí down here,” she added.

Local independent councillor Nial Ring condemned the attack.

"East Wall is a well-settled, close-knit community. A lot of this comes down to policing. We are seriously under-resourced. The gardaí are doing their best with the resources they have but they need more resources,” he said.

"The new community safety partnership being rolled out through the Department of Justice is designed to make people feel safe, and my argument is that people feel safe when they see gardaí on the street,” he added.

In January a 16-year-old youth, Josh Dunne, from Ballymun, was stabbed to death on East Wall Road. A delivery cyclist is before the courts charged with his murder.
