Three Gardaí were injured during a public order incident in the Market Square area of Navan, Co Meath on Tuesday.

According to The Meath Chronicle, a large group of up to 15 youths loitering in the area were asked to move on by a Gardaí patrolling the area at approximately 8.30pm.

The group of youths followed Garda instruction and moved a short distance before they began to verbally abuse the officers.

A patrol car arrived as back-up and two more officers approached the scene.

As Gardaí began to arrest one of the juveniles, they were assaulted.

During the incident, one female garda was pinned to the ground by one youth who stood on her arm.

The other Gardaí at the scene were kicked and punched, and while they were not seriously injured they received bruising and sought medical attention.

One male juvenile who was arrested at the scene was taken to Trim Garda Station for questioning.

Gardaí returned to the area once again at 10pm where they found a number of youths had returned to the scene and were engaged in anti-social behaviour.

While attempting to make further arrests, the perpetrators resisted and once again the arresting officers were subject to assaults.

During this incident, three youths, two males and one female were arrested and taken to Ashbourne Garda Station for questioning.

As all accused are underage a file will be prepared for the National Juvenile Liaison Office for consideration.

Gardaí have said that they are following a definite line of enquiry in relation to the incident and are in the process of identifying those who were part of the group.

CCTV is also being examined in the area as part of the investigation.

Any witnesses, including anybody with dash cam or mobile phone footage is asked to contact the Incident Room at Navan Garda Station on (046) 9079930 or the Garda Confidential Line 1800-666111.
