Police in Tenerife have arrested two Irish tourists over an alleged holiday insurance scam.

The pair were held as they prepared to board a flight home after arriving at the island airport.

Detectives say one was arrested on suspicion of filing a false police report after claiming his mobile phone and 350 euros were stolen and the other for the same crime after alleging his phone and 400 euros had been pinched.

The two men, who are both 25 and went to police together, have not been named.

They are thought to have been released on bail and allowed to fly home pending an ongoing probe after appearing before an investigating magistrate in a closed court hearing.

The holiday pals had been staying in a tourist complex in Arona in the south of Tenerife where they claimed the crimes had occurred.

Police made the arrests after discovering one of the alleged victims was carrying the phone he said had been taken.

A spokesman for Spain’s National Police in Tenerife confirmed: “Officers have arrested two Irish nationals aged 25 on suspicion of filing a false police report.

“The arrests were made after officers discovered contradictions in the men’s claims and subsequently found one of the mobile phones supposedly stolen was still in the owner’s possession.

“The men were held as they tried to leave Spain on a flight from Tenerife South airport.

“Falsely reporting you have been a victim of a crime is in itself a crime and if you then put in an insurance claim you are committing another crime, namely fraud.”

The police spokesman said a report on the arrests had been sent to a local court now tasked with the case.
