Gardai have smashed a high powered burglary gang after a dramatic incident near the iconic Slane Castle rock concert venue earlier today.

An unmarked Garda car attempted to intercept a car, that they knew to be stolen, on the Slane to Dublin road shortly after 9 am this morning and when the vehicle failed to stop the chasing cops called in a number of patrol cars and began a containment operation.

In a desperate bid to escape the car rammed the unmarked car and the five occupants attempted to flee on foot.

The Garda helicopter was called in and an area close to the concert site was sealed off and one of the occupants of the car was arrested immediately while another was detained soon afterwards, the other passengers are still at large.

One eye witness told sundayworld.com, 'There were squad cars arriving from everywhere, and a large number of cops surrounded an area near Slane Castle, the helicopter was over the village throughout the day, it was clear from the number of guards that arrived that whoever they were after were serious players, it wasn't just routine traffic stop.'

A Garda spokesperson confirmed, 'Gardaí attempted to stop a car on the N2 outside Slane, Co. Meath, at approximately 9.20am this morning, 17/06/2021. The car failed to stop for Gardaí and a managed containment operation was carried out.

'This operation was brought to a conclusion shortly after when the car in question collided with a Garda patrol car. The five occupants of the car then fled the vehicle on foot. No injuries have been reported at this stage.

'Two men, both aged in their 20s, have been arrested and taken to Navan Garda Station.

'Upon searching the car Gardaí discovered a quantity of items believed to be intended for use in crime such as snoods, hats, masks, screwdrivers, sledgehammer, bleach and petrol.

'The vehicle itself has also been confirmed as being stolen from the UK and Gardaí are liaising with the relevant authorities in this regard.

'Gardaí are appealing for anyone with information to contact them at Navan on 046 907 9930 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.

'Investigations are ongoing'.
