The cousin of Sophie Toscan du Plantier - who is also a producer on a new Netflix documentary about her death - has told of his hope that her murder will be solved.

Frederic Gazeau said that he hopes that in the future, someone will come forward with vital new information on the case.

“I think there are people, maybe in Ireland, who know the truth and I just hope that they will talk one day,” he told Newstalk’s Lunchtime Live. “Who knows? But I hope that people know something.

Gazeau told the news channel that he got on board the Netflix documentary series Sophie: A Murder in West Cork because he wanted to ensure she was at the centre of the story.

“The first word that comes to mind to describe her is “vitality.’ She was a very cheerful person and very bright but also with a darker side that we tried to show in this series,” he said.

“She had a great appetite for books and culture in general. She was very romantic character and we say in the show, she had a dark side and she liked romanticism - dark romanticism.”

He added that he wanted to highlight the case to the French public, where people are less familiar with the murder than they were in Ireland.

“In France, the murder is much less known than in Ireland,” he said. “The other objective was to bring Sophie into the light. I wanted to show who my cousin was. That was my first goal. I think that John (director John Dower) and all the team have done a really good job on that point.”

The series landed on Netflix today.
