The arrests were made after gardai stopped and searched four cars in Cavan yesterday afternoon.

Seven men were arrested in Cavan yesterday following an operation targeting a potential blackmail or extortion plot.

The arrests were made after gardaí, acting on information received, identified four cars in the area and conducted a number of stops and searches yesterday afternoon.

Two men, aged in their twenties, were arrested after a stop and search of the first car.

The search of the second car resulted in the discovery of a number of balaclavas and three male occupants, all aged in their thirties, were arrested.

Officers then recovered a number of concealed firearms and ammunition after a search carried out on the third car. The sole occupant of the vehicle, a man in his forties, was arrested.

A fourth vehicle was also stopped and searched and a man in his thirties was arrested.

All of the men were arrested under Section 15 of the Criminal Justice (Theft and Fraud Offences) Act of 2001.

All seven men are currently being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act of 1984 at Ballyconnell and Cavan Garda Stations.

A number of mobile phones and other items have been seized.

The investigation remains ongoing.
