A pervert caught with one of the biggest child porn stashes ever found here was in a relationship with a mum with several kids.

Andrew Patton is awaiting sentencing later this month after police discovered a haul of more than 16,000 videos and images of children being raped and sexually assaulted.

Last month the Sunday World confronted the 55-year-old on his doorstep but he declined to comment.

Now it has emerged Patton, of Orby Drive in east Belfast, was in a long-term relationship with a mum who had a number of children.

And we can reveal that despite Patton being arrested and charged five years ago, his partner was not made aware of the allegations against him until they were published in the Sunday World.

A former neighbour of the pervert has blown the whistle on the one-time postman's life of luxury and how he told friends and neighbours that police had raided his home over an allegation of fraud five years ago.

The concerned caller told the Sunday World: "Andrew Patton used to live in a street in east Belfast which is where I still live - and that's the house the police raided five years ago.

"Nobody knew at the time why the cops had raided his home but he vanished from the area and we heard he was telling people he'd been charged with some kind of fraud.

"It was only when the Sunday World did the story about him being in court last month everyone discovered the truth that he was into child porn.

"Everyone in the area was shocked.

"But what was most shocking was the fact Patton was in a relationship for years with a mum who had three or four kids, I think.

"Through a friend of a friend I heard the poor woman had no idea what her partner had been arrested for.

"Apparently he told her the same lies about being arrested for fraud.

"And I hear she's absolutely devastated because she's been in a relationship for at least 20 years and was still with him for the past five years even though the PSNI had charged him with child porn.

"The police didn't tell her so she had no idea and kept seeing him. I'm a mum myself and I can't begin to imagine how she must have felt when she found out the truth.

"If it was me I'd want the police to make me aware of the allegations."

Patton could be going to jail when he's sentenced in two weeks for his apparent addiction to watching images and videos of kids being abused.

Although the total amount seized by the police has not yet been disclosed, it totals more than 16,000 indecent pictures and video files.

The sheer scale of the stash helped cause a delay to the hearing with some of the offences going back five years.

Patton appeared at Antrim Crown Court where it emerged he had a staggering collection of illegal images.

The source also told the Sunday World Patton lived a life of luxury on a postman's salary.

"He always bought the best of things and went on holiday two or three times a year to places like Florida and Spain," said the former neighbour.

Just hours after admitting to all the offences put to him in court, we called at Patton's door but he declined to comment.

In response to questions about why he had so many images and whether he feared going to jail, he just repeatedly said "No" and then closed the door.

In addition to his confession that he had at least 16,275 indecent or prohibited images of children, Patton also admitted to having at least 70 sickening videos.

Appearing at court by video link, Patton entered guilty pleas to all of the 44 charges against him.

In total Patton confessed his guilt to 34 counts of possessing indecent images, seven of having prohibited images and three of having extreme pornography, all committed between December 28, 2015 and February 18, 2016.

None of the facts surrounding the charges was opened in court during the brief arraignment proceedings on Wednesday, but the particulars of the offences reveal that Patton had 1,197 images and 44 videos in the most serious category A, 1,083 images and 17 videos at assessed at category B along with 6,455 category C images and nine videos.

In addition, pervy Patton was caught with 7,540 prohibited images of children and three images which amounted to extreme pornography.

Defence counsel Sean Mullan said Patton was the "carer for his elderly sister, is very keen to have this matter brought to a conclusion as there has been extensive delay".

Freeing Patton on bail, Judge Richard Greene QC adjourned passing sentence until October 15 by which stage a pre-sentence probation report will be compiled.
