Speaking out Man beaten by axe-wielding thugs issues defiant taunt to his attackers in video

'If ye have any balls on ye, come up and say who you are, now just say who ye are'

A man who was viciously beaten by two axe-wielding thugs in a Tullamore supermarket on Tuesday night has issued a defiant taunt to his attackers in a video posted on Facebook.

In the shocking attack that was captured on video, the victim, who was hospitalised, is seen being subjected to a series of blows from his assailants.

The footage shows the man who is in his 30s, and who is wearing a tracksuit top and shorts, being set upon by two others armed with axes and what appears to be an axe handle.

As he twists and turns on the ground to avoid the blows raining down on him, the two masked men, who are dressed all in black, repeatedly hit him on the back and the head with the axes.

The targeted and violent assault happened in a Tesco in Tullamore, Co Offaly at around 8.30pm, when the two men entered the store and attacked the man in front of horrified shoppers.

Emergency services were alerted and the injured man was taken to the Midlands Regional Hospital in Tullamore for treatment.

Gardai had initially feared the victim suffered a fractured skull during the shocking incident.

However, in a new video recorded in what appears to be his hospital room, the man scoffs at his attackers and dares them to reveal themselves.

“Right lads,” he says, “you all know who this is. As you all know I got attacked there by a couple of sheepdogs, I wouldn’t even call them men, not last night, the night before.

“The worst injury I have, I done to myself. And that’s this leg here, I twisted my ankle. They gave me a bit of a cut there,” he adds, indicating his left inner thigh, “a bit of a scrape there, and I have a cut on me back.

“That’s from four of ye, well, three of ye, while one stood in the car.”

He adds: “If ye have any balls on ye, come up and say who you are, now just say who ye are, that's all you need to do, just come and say who ye are, but you should be ashamed of yourself.

“Look at that," he says, gesturing to himself, “you thought you had me destroyed. Look at that, ha-ha ya boyo.

"Number one I am, number fu**kin’ one. Look at me, ya thought I was destroyed lads, didn’t ye? Look at that for a head, boys, a head bet a load a times with a hatchet.”

Gardaí in Tullamore are appealing for witnesses and enquiries are ongoing.

"It’s understood that, shortly after 8.30pm a man in his 30s was approached and assaulted by two males armed with an axe inside a supermarket in Cloncollog, Tullamore," they said.

"He was taken from the scene to Tullamore Hospital for treatment. His condition is not thought to be life threatening. The scene is currently preserved for examination.
