A man in his 20s has been arrested after a mural of Michael Collins was vandalised in West Cork earlier this week.

The mural was painted during the summer at a recently installed parklet on Kent Street in Clonakilty by artists ADW and Darren Warren from the well-known Waterford Walls Project.

Posting a pic of the destroyed mural, local TD Christopher O'Sullivan said: “Why would anyone do that?! I really feel for the artists and community who have put so much work into this area. We will get it back to how it was!”

The vandalism was discovered shortly before the launch of the new West Cork Michael Collins Trail on Monday and Cork Gardaí quickly arrested a suspect.

The suspect has also been linked to a number of incidents of criminal damage in the area recently.

A spokesperson for An Garda Síochána said: “Gardaí have arrested a man in his 20s following a number of incidents of criminal damage in Clonakilty between 10th and 13th September 2021.”
