One of the three men arrested as gardai smashed a €7 million cannabis smuggling operation into Ireland was previously jailed in UK over a similar enterprise.

Gardai confirmed on Friday night that three men, one Irish national with an address in Blackrock, Co. Dublin and two UK nationals had been arrested after €7 million worth of cannabis was seized at Dublin Port.

A joint operation carried out by Revenue customs officers and Garda members resulted in the seizure of 352kg of herbal cannabis.

The illegal drugs arrived in a container from Spain through Dublin Port.

Three men aged 31, 47 and 49 were subsequently arrested by gardaí.

They were detained currently under the provisions Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking Act) 1996 at garda stations in Dublin.

Sources have confirmed to the Sunday World that one of the UK nationals detained previously served a two and a half year sentence in the UK after police there arrested him during a swoop where €600,000 worth of cannabis was being moved within the UK.

Police moved in as he and an associated were moving almost 48kg of super-strength cannabis from a lock-up in Bedfordshire for distribution.

Cops said the man had hired another man to drive the van but that he was the brains behind the operation having rented out the lock-up.

When he was arrested, an hour after the van was seized, cops found a a plastic bag full of money in the car which, when counted, amounted to more than £36,000.

Police later searched the lockup and found another 5kg of cannabis, which matched the original haul with an above average level of THC, the main psychoactive substance found in the class C drug.

The court heard the man was a cocaine addict who was heavily in debt.

As a result of the raids, the man was jailed for two-and-a-half years.

The judge also ordered the destruction of the drugs and confiscation of the vehicles. Neither man was believed to be the main smuggler.

Gardai here say searches are continuing in connection with Friday’s €7 million seizure and investigations are ongoing.
