failed robbery Man arrested during a dramatic stand-off with armed gardai remains in custody

A man who was arrested during a dramatic stand-off with armed gardai that was captured on video yesterday in Dublin remains in custody this morning.

Footage shot on North Fredrick Street in the North inner city shows the aftermath of a failed robbery of a shop on nearby Dorset Street.

The drama unfolded after a shop worker spotted a man who was loitering outside the store acting suspiciously. He noticed that the suspicious man was carrying what he believed to be a gun and he managed to lock the front door just as he attempted to barge inside.

The worker then raced into the back of the store where he raised the alarm.

The suspect, in his 50s, fled to North Fredrick Street where he was surrounded by gardai.

The footage of the incident then shows gardai taking cover while plain clothes officers surround the man and attemt to negotiate with him.

They then rush towards the gunman who is wrestled to the ground as several members of the public look on.

“Gardaí from Mountjoy, assisted by the Garda Armed Support Unit and Air Support Unit responded to an incident which began at approximately 3.10pm yesterday afternoon, December 16, at a premises on Dorset Street in Dublin,” gardai said this morning.

“A man (50s) is alleged to have produced a firearm at the location and threatened the owner of the premises.

“The owner of the premises managed to leave the location safely. The man in his 50s then fled to a nearby street. He was subsequently located by gardaí on Frederick Street,” a Garda spokesperson said.

“A standoff lasted for a short time until the man was eventually disarmed and arrested by gardaí.

“He was later taken to Mountjoy Garda Station where he currently remains detained under Section 30 of the Offences against the State Act, 1939.”

Gardai said no shots were discharged during the incident and no injuries were reported. The firearm produced was later discovered to be an imitation.
