This is the €30,000 cannabis seizure made by Gardaí in Galway yesterday.

One man was arrested when officers from the Galway Divisional Drugs Unit searched a house in the Knocknacarra area on foot of a warrant.

“Cannabis herb worth approximately €30,000 (analysis pending) was found in the course of the search,” a garda spokesperson said.

“A man in his 50s was arrested at the scene and detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 for questioning, at North Western Regional Headquarters, Galway.

“He has since been released without charge and a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions. The drugs will be sent to Forensic Science Ireland (FSI) for analysis.

“The investigation is ongoing.”

Gardaí said the seizure forms part of Operation Tara, an enhanced national anti-drugs strategy, which was launched by Garda Commissioner Drew Harris in July 2021.

The focus of Operation Tara is to disrupt, dismantle and prosecute drug trafficking networks, at all levels - international, national, local - involved in the importation, distribution, cultivation, production, local sale and supply of controlled drugs.
