Gardai discovered cigarettes worth more €20,000 and €4,200 in cash when they pulled over a car spotted turning away from a checkpoint on Monday.

A man in his 40s was arrested under money laundering legislation by Gardaí following the seizure in Blanchardstown just after 1.30pm.

The DMR West Roads Policing Unit was conducting a checkpoint at Waterville Road as part of ongoing operations in support of public health measures when they spotted the car turning around.

Gardaí intercepted the car and after a search the cigarettes and cash were found.

The occupant was arrested and detained under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at Blanchardstown Garda Station.

Gardai say he has since been released without charge and a file will now be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The investigation is ongoing, they added.
