Money haul Gardai seize €160k in cash during 'stop and search' operation in Athlone
A 21-year-old man was arrested at the scene
Gardaà have seized €160,000 in cash and arrested a man following an operation last night in Athlone.
The man was arrested following a ‘stop and search’ operation in the area of Auburn Villas.
At approximately 9.30pm, Gardaà from the town’s crime and drugs units stopped a car.
A garda spokesman said a search of the vehicle was carried out under Section 23 of the Misuse of Drugs Act.
During this search €160,000 was found concealed in the car.
The spokesman said: "A 21-year-old man who was the sole occupant of the car was arrested at the scene and detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984. "
The man has since been released without charge and a file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions. Investigations are ongoing.
