Gardai probe if man who was previously warned of threat against his life was target of Dublin shooting

Exact details of the dispute cannot be outlined here for legal reasons but it has been confirmed that the 35-year-old man who suffered at least one gunshot injury was shot in a case of mistaken identity.

It is suspected the shooting was carried out as part of a dispute which centres on the Palmerstown area of the west side of the city.

The victim is said to be recovering well after a gunman discharged a number of shots into his home at around 11.50pm through a downstairs window.

A major line in the investigation is that the intended target was a man from the Inchicore area who was with the victim in the property when it was attacked by the reckless gunman.

This individual who is aged in his late 20s was previously officially warned by gardaí late last year about an active threat against his life.

It is believed he is being accused by associates of a young man who passed away of being linked for his death.

He was handed a GIM (Garda Information Message) form and offered security advice by detectives from Kevin Street Garda Station.

It is understood that since then there has been a number of attempted assaults on the man but by far the most serious incident happened last month when a property connected to him was attacked.

Suspects armed with a hammer and handgun attempted to gain entry to the house and when they were unsuccessful shots were fired at a window of the house in an incident which unfolded just days before St Patrick’s Day.

“All things considered at this stage, it would be crazy to rule this chap out as the intended target of the shooting,” a source said.

“The fella that was shot is not involved in organised crime but the chap that was with him has got himself into major bother over what is best described at this stage as a very serious motoring matter.

“In fairness he is not involved in organised crime either but these things can be as clear of mud at times but there was an individual in that house who is under active death threat and therefore he was the most likely target,” the source explained.

Gardaí continue to appeal for information about the attempted murder and they have recovered the handgun used in the reckless attack in a partially burnt out van that was abandoned in Clondalkin.

“Gardaí are investigating a shooting incident that occurred at approximately 11:50pm on Tuesday, 19th April, 2022, at a residence in the Pimlico Cottages area of Dublin 8,” a spokesman said in a statement.

“A man in his 30s was injured and was taken to St James's Hospital where his condition is currently described as. stable.

“A vehicle was discovered partially burnt out at Old Church Way, Clondalkin, Dublin 22, at approximately 12:15am on Wednesday, 20th April, 2022. This vehicle is currently being technically examined.

“An Incident Room has been established at Kevin Street Garda Station. No arrests have been made at this time.”
