Gardaí in Sligo are investigating the 'disturbing' slaughter of a lamb in a field last night.

A farmer found the remains of the butchered animal on land just off the Bundoran Road in Sligo this morning.

Gardai said the incident in which somebody slaughtered a lamb in a field last night “ appears to be a theft”.

“This disturbing act was carried out by someone who has some expertise in butchering animals,” Gardai said.

“We are appealing to the farming community to be aware, and to report any suspicious activity on their lands.

“We are also appealing to anyone who has any information to this particular crime to make contact with your local Gardaí.”

This latest incident comes as Gardai in Wicklow issued an appeal for people living in rural communities to be on the alert for suspicious movements after new figures reveal the shocking scale of sheep stealing.

The Gardai revealed that they have reports of thefts of 176 sheep in Co Wicklow for 2020, which were all taken in six different incidents. There has already been one reported theft this year in West Wicklow.
