Handbag theft Gardaí investigate after 'begging' man steals handbag from elderly woman in Limerick

Gardaí are investigating after a handbag was stolen from an elderly woman in Limerick on Sunday.

An 82-year-old woman had driven into the city and parked her car on Broad Street at approximately 1.30pm on Sunday, Sergeant Ber Leetch confirmed.

A man approached her, grabbed her handbag from the passenger seat, and ran away.

Sergeant Leetch said the woman was “very shocked” after the incident.

“A lady who is eighty-two years old drove into the city from Caherdavin on Sunday last around 1.30pm. She parked on Broad Street,” he said.

“She was approached by a male who was begging for money, she didn’t engage with him but he spotted her handbag on the passenger seat, grabbed it and ran off. The poor lady was very shocked.”

No arrests have been made in relation to this incident and investigations remain ongoing.

A garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí are investigating a theft that occurred on Broad Street on Sunday 22nd August. A handbag was taken from a vehicle in the area. No arrests have been made, investigations are ongoing.”
