Tallaght shooting Gardai believe criminals involved in rivalry may be to blame for Tallaght gun attack on officers

Gardai believe a group of young criminals involved in a dispute with rivals may have been responsible for a gun attack on officers in Dublin this morning.

A gunman opened fire on gardai shortly after 2.30am in the Rossfield Avenue area of Tallaght .

There had been a number of minor incidents in the area in the build up to the incident and extra garda patrols had been dispatched to the area as a result of those incident.

Unarmed gardai in a marked car were patrolling the area when they came across a group of three young adult men armed with a firearm and a baseball bat.

Gardai suspect the men had been involved in a local dispute and were planning to carry out an attack on rivals in the area when gardai disturbed them.

One of the men opened fire on gardai firing a number of shots at the car.

One of the shots hit the bonnet of the vehicle but thankfully the gardai were not injured in the incident.

The three men fled the scene and are believed to have made their getaway on bicycles.

The group are understood to be young adults in their late teens or early 20s and are believe to live locally.

Gardai said a technical examination was carried out at the scene this morning.

No arrests have been made in relation to the attack but investigations are ongoing.
