Five gardai were assaulted and required hospital treatment after a shocking outbreak of violence in Portlaoise last night.

In a “number of incidents” involving “individuals acting aggressive and violent towards ambulance service and Gardaí”, five officers were attacked and injured.

An Garda Siochana revealed in a Facebook post that “colleagues in Portlaoise dealt with a number of incidents which involved individuals acting aggressive and violent towards ambulance service and Gardaí.

“Two particular incidents involved Gardaí being punched, kicked and spat at.

"Five Gardai were assaulted, four were treated in A&E with one detained in hospital overnight.”

The post reveals that arrests were made and court appearances will follow.

“Substance and alcohol abuse key factor in each situation,” they added.

The incidents in Portlaoise occurred on what was an otherwise quiet St Patrick’s Day night for Gardai in Dublin where there were no further arrests following some minor disruptions in the afternoon.

Gardai said this morning that there had been no incidents reported to them since their last update that was issued at 8pm last night.

At that stage, 21 people including 17 males and four females had been arrested after various incidents around the city.

A total of 14 persons have since appeared before a sitting of Dublin District Court at the Criminal Courts of Justice. Another seven people have been charged with offences and released on station bail.
