A female health worker was punched in the face by two men during an attempted hijacking at Daisy Hill Hospital in Newry, the PSNI have said.

During the incident, the police said the woman was punched as the pair tried to get her car keys just after 8.30pm yesterday evening.

A 40-year-old-man was later arrested on suspicion of attempted hijacking and common assault.

Detective Inspector Johnston said: “They assaulted the female owner of the car, punching her to the face, while trying to get the car keys.

“A passer-by intervened before the men made off from the scene. The woman attended hospital for her injuries, which are not believed to be life threatening at this time.

“We would continue to appeal to the public for any information that could help us identify the other suspect in the incident, who was described as being of slim build and wearing dark tracksuit bottoms, a dark zip up hoody, trainers and dark gloves.

“If you have information you believe could assist our investigation, call detectives on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference 1826 of 31/01/22.”

SDLP MLA for Newry and Armagh, Justin McNulty, said he was “totally disgusted” at the attack by “thugs”.

He added: “I understand that the two men involved in the attack only left the scene after a passer-by intervened, so I dread to think what might have happened if that person hadn’t have come upon them.

“The woman who was attacked attended hospital to receive treatment for her physical injuries. I can only imagine how horrendous an ordeal this must have been for her and for her family. I hope she recovers and has not been traumatised by this horrible act of cowardice.

“I have contacted the police and an arrest has been made. It is vital now that the second culprit is apprehended and proactive steps are taken by police to ensure that this never happens again.”
