Major stash Drugs worth €150K and phones linked to Kinahan cartel seized at Mountjoy Prison

INMATES connected to the Kinahan cartel are suspected to be behind a major stash of drugs and mobile phones seized inside Mountjoy Prison yesterday.

The haul included an estimated 14,000 LSD tabs along with quantities of cocaine, heroin and several hundred other as yet unidentified tablets, according to sources.

Also found in the search were 15 mobile phones including smart phones and miniature mobiles which are easily concealed.

The search was carried out by the Organised Search Group in what is being described an as “intelligence led operation.”

The entire stash found on the prison’s C Landing is estimated to be worth in the region of €150,000 and is now being investigated by gardai.

Behind bars, drugs often sell for four times the price on the street outside making it a lucrative business for criminals gangs, according to sources.

An official spokesperson said: “The Irish Prison Service can confirm that a substantial seizure of contraband has been seized in Mountjoy Prison on the 12 October 2021.”

“The Irish Prison Service has commenced an investigation into the seizure and is working with An Garda Síochána in this regard.”

In November last year a similar stash was been seized as it was being smuggled into Mountjoy Prison in Dublin.

It was strongly suspected the delivery, which included more than 20 phones and two bags of suspected cocaine, was intended for inmates linked to the Kinahan cartel.

Members of the Kinahan cartel are the dominant faction in Mountjoy Prison and are believed to control the supply of illicit goods inside.
