A reckless disqualified motorist was caught speeding and failed a drink-driving test on a learner permit over 80km from their home in Kildare yesterday.

According to a tweet posted on the An Garda Siochana Traffic account, Naas Road Policing Unit detected a car speeding on the M7 near Monasterevin.

The driver was on a “non-essential journey”, with current restrictions only allowing travel for people with a “reasonable excuse”, such as for work purposes.

After checking on the mobility app, gardaí realised that the driver was on a learner permit and had been disqualified for four years.

The motorist also failed a breathalyser test for alcohol. They were then arrested, and their car has since been impounded.

A garda spokesperson said the driver is due to appear in court.
