A conspiracy theorist jailed for assaulting a garda wrote to the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission in a rage, calling them "scumbags, jobsworths and filth" because they rejected numerous complaints he made against officers.

Gerard Stokes (52) was sentenced to five months at Sligo District Court for assaulting Garda Ronan O'Donnell outside Enniscrone Garda Station two years ago.

Stokes, who has an address at Cahermore Holiday Village in Enniscrone, served another five-month sentence last year after subjecting a woman to a two-year campaign of harassment and intimidation.

He has launched harassment campaigns against a number of other innocent people in the past as well as making a litany of unsuccessful complaints against gardaí, who he regularly videos.

Stokes also posts debunked conspiracy theories online on numerous topics, including Covid-19, 5G and how he thinks Nasa plans to stage a fake alien invasion using holograms.

His latest conviction comes after he attacked Gda O'Donnell on March 16, 2019.

Gda O'Donnell told Sligo District Court he was at the station and heard someone "belting on the window". When he went out he saw Stokes and told him to leave the area.

He refused to leave and Gda O'Donnell said when he went out a second time Stokes "came for me".

The officer said both men ended up "rolling on the street" and he got Stokes's arms behind his back.

Gda O'Donnell was left with a cut to his upper lip and abrasions to his hand as a result of the incident.

The court heard how Stokes has made a litany of complaints against Garda O'Donnell to GSOC, who found the officer had no case to answer.

He has also made numerous complaints about other gardaí, which were all unsuccessful. The Sunday World can reveal that Stokes wrote to GSOC two weeks before he was in court, lashing out at the commission for not finding in his favour.

"As you know I have lots of complaints with your organisation. You people have a zero per cent strike rate. You have no intention of doing your job," he wrote.

He then attacked gardaí, calling them "dirty filth" before turning his attention to GSOC itself in a bizarre rant.

"I find GSOC to be full of scumbags and jobsworths and filth who just come out with sly comments and slithery remarks," he wrote.

Stokes went on to make a series of baseless claims against gardaí, which have all been rejected by GSOC, and said how he was going to put videos up online that he has taken of gardaí.

He concluded by calling GSOC "dirty scummy filth" and said how he doesn't want the commission to investigate his latest complaint.

The Sligo Champion reported that when Stokes appeared in court last Thursday week he made numerous baseless claims about how gardaí had wronged him and how they had taken documents, phones and other items from him. The court heard GSOC had already cleared gardaí in relation to these claims.

Stokes denied assaulting the garda but Judge Kevin Kilrane did not believe Stokes and sentenced him to five months in prison.

Last August Stokes was jailed for five months for subjecting a Sligo mother to a torturous campaign of harassment and intimidation

Helen Gaughan, from Enniscrone, told the Sunday World after his sentencing that she endured "a never-ending nightmare" after Stokes decided to target her because of a random encounter between their dogs on a beach - a month before he attacked Gda O'Donnell.

"I had my two dogs and his dog ran down towards my dogs and they started playing. He took an absolute fit and went down on his knees and went red in the face and started roaring and shouting. I said 'they're alright they're only playing' and he started roaring "they're not alright my dog is after your stupid c***ing dog, you fat ugly c***t'."

Ms Gaughan was extremely shaken by the encounter but it was only the beginning of her nightmare.

"I'd be on the street and he'd come up and start roaring 'you're a f***ing ugly bitch, you have your head up in the air and you think you're something'.

"He'd follow me into the local shop. If I was on the local bus with my son he'd come down and put his two arms on the seat and be completely intimidating," she said.

"I was worried he'd physically do something. It was getting that bad. I'm living on my own with my son. I was thinking we'd have to move. "

Stokes has previous convictions for various offences, including cultivating cannabis.
