Gang boss Brian Rattigan had 'a major falling out' with Kinahan cartel killer Jonathan Keogh in Portlaoise Prison.

Sources say the two squared off after Keogh, Freddie Thompson and Eamonn Cumberton were moved to maximum security Portlaoise Prison from Mountjoy.

Rattigan was freed from prison on Tuesday after 18 years behind bars at the high-security jail.

Keogh is currently serving life for the murder of Gerry 'The Monk' Hutch's nephew Gareth Hutch.

The 36-year-old fired the fatal shots that killed Hutch (36) as he was getting into his car outside Avondale House flats on North Cumberland Street in Dublin on the morning of May 24, 2016.

Keogh, Thompson and Cumberton were moved to A-Block in Portlaoise in March of 2018 after concerns arose in the Dublin prison over the control the cartel gang had over other inmates.

It's understood that once they arrived in Portlaoise they began to flex their muscles.

"Rattigan had been in Portlaoise a long time and had things running just the way he liked them," a source said.

"The arrival of the cartel inmates didn't sit well with him and, on one occasion, the tension led to a stand-off."

Although Rattigan and Thompson, the two main players in the Crumlin Drimnagh feud, publicly put their enmity aside so as Thompson could be moved off protection in the prison, it's understood Rattigan and Keogh remained hostile to each other up to Rattigan's release.

Rattigan's future is the subject of much speculation.

The gang boss said he is a "changed man" but many gardaí are extremely sceptical.

He was spotted outside his family home in Drimnagh on Wednesday morning but officers have also received reports that he plans to go to Spain.

His release has led to an increase in armed Garda patrols in the area but there is no specific threat on Rattigan and he has not received an official warning.

Rattigan formerly of Cooley Road, in Drimnagh, has been in prison for most of his adult life and pleaded guilty, in October, 2018, to killing Declan Gavin (21) - the stabbing that led to the Crumlin/Drimnagh feud and caused at least 15 murders.

He had previously been convicted of Gavin's murder but this was overturned in 2017 and he was jailed for nine years for his manslaughter in January, 2019.

The father of one has been in custody over Gavin's death since he was first charged with the offence in September, 2003, but during that time he has also served separate sentences for serious drugs, firearms and assault convictions.

He was also given a 17-year sentence for organising a €1m heroin deal from his jail cell in Portlaoise Prison.

However that sentence, which was imposed in March, 2013, was backdated to the time in which gardaí made the massive bust which was June, 2008.
