A niece of Gerry “The Monk” Hutch has been fined for stealing pot noodles from a discount store.

Donna Hutch (47) was down on her luck having lost her place to stay when she shoplifted the food for her own consumption.

Judge Bryan Smyth fined her €100 when she appeared in Dublin District Court.

Hutch, a mother-of-two with an address at Ellis Quay in central Dublin, pleaded guilty to theft.

Garda Sergeant Maire McDevitt said the incident happened at Liffey Street in the north city centre at 5.40pm on May 7 this year.

Gardai on plainclothes patrol in the area saw Hutch exiting Dealz and asked to look at the bag she was carrying. The store manager said Hutch had stolen three food items and the accused was arrested.

The items were pot noodles and the total value was €4.50, defence solicitor Philip Hannon said.

Hutch had 389 previous convictions, the last of which was in February last year, for theft. Before that, she was convicted of a theft offence in Wexford.

On a scale of seriousness, “this would be at the lower end,” Mr Hannon said.

The offence arose when Hutch lost her hostel accommodation after her situation had stabilised for a number of months.

The stolen goods were “food items for her consumption” and the accused was already in custody for a “similar type of matter” when she appeared in court.

Judge Smyth imposed a €100 fine, payable forthwith, and with two days in custody in default.

Previously, a court heard Hutch came from the north inner city, dropped out of education at a very young age and developed a serious addiction.

Mr Hannon said heroin was "sweeping through that area" and Hutch “fell in with the lifestyle at a very young age."

Hutch had gone to a treatment programme to overcome her drug problem, but later developed an addiction to alcohol.
