A MAN who left a restaurant without paying a €180 bill for a meal with friends has been jailed for three months.

Cian Fay (23) was one of three men who ran up the food and drinks bill at a city centre restaurant and was later identified on CCTV.

Judge Michael Walsh sentenced him at Dublin District Court.

Fay, of Empress Place, Dublin 1, pleaded guilty to making off without paying for the meal in an incident at TGI Fridays, Westmoreland Street.

A garda said that last December 18, Fay and two other men went to the restaurant, sat down and ordered €180 worth of food and beverages, which they consumed.

Convictions

They left without paying, but one of them, Fay, was identified from good-quality CCTV footage and was later arrested and charged.

Fay had 101 previous convictions for road traffic and other offences.

It was the first time he had been charged with making off without paying.

Fay was already serving a sentence with a release date in June when he appeared in court.

He previously had a "significant drug difficulty", and his short time in custody had a positive effect on him, his solicitor Tony Collier said.

"He seems committed to living a pro-social and drug-free life on his release," he said.

He asked Judge Walsh not to add to Fay's existing sentence.

The judge said the accused deserved credit for his guilty plea and he was "heartened" to note Fay was applying himself in prison.
