A man is due before a special sitting of Ennis District Court this evening after a shopkeeper was hit over the head with a bottle in an attempted robbery in Limerick.

The man, who is in his mid-20s, was arrested after the incident at a business premises on St Nessans Road at approximately 5pm yesterday.

Gardai said a lone male had entered the premises and armed himself with a glass bottle from the shelf.

He subsequently attempted to take money from the till and hit the owner of the shop over the head with the bottle and injured his face.

He was arrested by gardaí who arrived on the scene while the injured party received treatment by ambulance staff.

Gardai said he was brought to Roxboro Road Garda station where he was detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

“He has since been charged in relation to the incident,” gardai said. “He is due to appear before a special sitting of Ennis District Court this evening Saturday 21st August, 2021 at 6pm.”

Gardaí added that investigations are ongoing.
