A man is due before the courts this morning after gardai seized a drone with mobile phones and drugs attached to it.

The man, aged in his 20s, who was arrested in connection with this seizure in Portlaoise on Wednesday has been charged and is due to appear before Portlaoise District Court this morning, January 8.

He had been arrested after gardai seized the drone along with a package containing mobile phones, chargers and quantities of crack cocaine, cocaine and cannabis, with a combined estimated value of €5,000 (analysis pending).

The discovery was made at St Johns’ Square near Portlaoise Prison as part of an ongoing investigation by the Laois Offaly Divisional Drugs Unit at approximately 4pm.

Two cars were also seized by investigating Gardaí during the operation.

Gardai say investigations are ongoing.

Portlaoise Prison is Ireland's highest security jail and houses a large number of dissident Republicans - as well as gangland figures linked to the Kinahan Cartel.
