A young man caught with knives in his backpack in Dublin city centre had them for a picnic with friends during lockdown, a court heard.

Dalti Bakekolo (21) ran from gardaí and tried to throw the bag into the Liffey because he realised he also had cannabis in it and was "very anxious and scared".

Bakekolo, of Montpelier Hill, Dublin 7, admitted unlawful possession of knives and drugs and obstructing gardaí.

Judge Bryan Smyth said he would apply the Probation Act if the accused made a €400 charity donation.

Dublin District Court heard gardaí on patrol at North Lotts, Dublin 1 on June 3, 2021 saw the accused and two other men standing in an archway.

There was a strong smell of cannabis and Bakekolo quickly picked a bag up from the ground and put it under his jacket, leaving in a hurry.

When gardaí stopped him he was argumentative and reluctant to let them search him.

He began shouting at members of the public, requesting they record what was happening.

Bakekolo fled and attempted to enter a moving taxi on Liffey Street before running to the Ha'penny Bridge and attempting to throw the bag over into the Liffey.

He failed and when the bag was searched, gardaí found a large kitchen knife, steak knife and cannabis worth €50.

The accused, who had no previous convictions, had been having a picnic with friends in St Stephen's Green earlier, his lawyer said. It was during lockdown when people had to meet friends outside.
