THE case against a man accused of carrying out a "brutal" attack on an elderly neighbour has been further adjourned.

More time was granted at Dublin District Court for the directions of the DPP in the case against Michael Joyce.

Mr Joyce (23) is accused of assaulting a man who was allegedly bound with cable ties in his flat and struck with a hammer and shovel.

He also allegedly demanded €10,000 from the man before assaulting and injuring him.

The accused, with an address at Prussia Street, Dublin 7 is charged with assault causing harm to the man at the alleged victim's flat in the same building on January 9 this year.

The case has been before Dublin District Court several times since Mr Joyce was arrested and granted bail in January.

On the latest court date for the case, the presiding judge was told the DPP's directions were not available.

It was adjourned to a date next month.

Mr Joyce was previously granted bail despite garda objections over the seriousness of the alleged crimes .

It was claimed the accused carried out a serious, unprovoked attack on the man, causing injuries to his head and hands.

Mr Joyce allegedly went to the man's flat and demanded €10,000 before assaulting him.

It was alleged weapons were used - a hammer and shovel - and that the man was "tied up with cable ties."

Mr Joyce was "caught red-handed" as he was found hiding in his room upstairs, gardaí claimed.
