A man who was arrested after gardai seized heroin worth €1.34 million and cash is due to appear before a special sitting of Limerick District Court tomorrow at 10.30am.

The man, who is in his 40s has been charged following the search operations that took place in the Limerick area on Friday.

He had been arrested after gardaí seized heroin worth of €1.34 million during the course of one search that was carried out by officers attached to the Limerick Divisional Drug Unit.

They were supported by gardaí from Mayorstone, the Regional Dog Unit and members of the Defence Forces as they raided several locations in Corbally and Clonlara as part of an operation targeting the distribution of controlled drugs.

A further search took place at a separate location where gardaí seized €12,500 in cash.

"A man (40s) was arrested at the scene of this search and was taken to Henry Street Garda Station where he is currently detained pursuant to Section 4, Criminal Justice Act, 1984," gardai said yesterday.

Gardai said the seizure forms part of Operation Tara, an enhanced national anti-drugs strategy which was launched by Garda Commissioner Drew Harris in July 2021.

The focus of Operation Tara is to disrupt, dismantle and prosecute drug trafficking networks, at all levels - international, national, local - involved in the importation, distribution, cultivation, production, local sale and supply of controlled drugs.
