A man charged with possession of pipe bombs and ammunition in a house in Co Louth has been granted bail.

Stephen Donnelly (42), of Rosevale, Drogheda appeared before Drogheda District Court charged with possession of explosives in suspicious circumstances.

Garda Eoin Keane gave evidence of arresting Donnelly and charging him on Saturday, April 24. Gda Keane said the accused made no reply after caution.

Donnelly and a second man were arrested at a house in the Rosevale area of Drogheda last Thursday.

It is alleged two pipe bombs, gunpowder and a large quantity of ammunition along with a quantity of cocaine and tablets were found following the search of the property.

The second man was released without charge and a file has gone to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The court heard there were no objections to Donnelly being granted bail - under strict conditions.

The bail conditions include lodging €1,000 cash bond, reside at a certain address, sign on three times a week at Drogheda Garda Station and to surrender his passport.

He has also to provide gardai with a new phone number after the court heard gardaí seized his mobile phone as part of the investigation.

Gda Keane told Judge Eirinn McKiernan directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions have not been received yet and requested “a lengthy remand.”

Dressed in a navy jumper and blue jeans, Donnelly did not address the court during the short hearing.

The case was adjourned until July 5 for directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
