Galway man accused of strangling and threatening to kill ex-partner to go on trial

A 49-year old Co Galway man was today returned for trial in connection with allegedly falsely imprisoning, strangling and fracturing the eye socket of his ex-partner.
At a special sitting of Gort District Court, the Book of Evidence was served in the case where Adam McMullan faces six charges concerning the alleged assault, false imprisonment and threatening to kill his ex-partner at Kilcrimple, Gort, Co Galway on September 19th last.
After the Book of Evidence was served, Judge Mary Larkin sent forward Mr McMullan for trial at Galway Circuit Court in January.
Mr McMullan is facing four separate assault causing harm charges of the woman concerning allegedly fracturing her eye socket, fracturing a rib, causing multiple cuts and bruises and taking out clumps out of her hair at the same address on the same date.
Mr McMullan from Kilderry, Peterswell a townland, 9km from Gort in south Co Galway has been remanded in custody since first appearing in court on September 21st concerning an initial assault charge against his ex-partner from the same alleged incident on September 19th.
In the case, Mr McMullan is charged with intentionally or recklessly engaging in the strangulation of his ex-partner which created a substantial risk of death or serious harm to her at Kilcrimple, Gort, Galway on September 19th last.
Mr McMullan is also charged with threatening to kill his ex-partner at the same address on the same date.

Mr McMullan is also charged with the false imprisonment of the woman at the same address on the same date along with the four separate assault charges.
Mr McMullan made no reply when charged and cautioned and
solicitor for Mr McMullan, Daragh Hassett stated the case concerns “very serious charges”.
Legal aid has been granted in the case and Mr Hassett said that given the charges he asked that the legal aid certificate be extended for two barristers, one senior counsel and one junior counsel to represent Mr McMullan at Galway Circuit Court.
Judge Mary Larkin told Mr McMullan that if an alibi forms any part of his defence to furnish details to the prosecution within 14 days.
Mr Hassett told Judge Larkin that there is no application for bail and Mr McMullan is to remain on remand in custody ahead of his case coming before Galway Circuit Court on January 12th next.
