AN OUT-of-work chef caught selling heroin substitute metadone on the street was financing his own drug addiction at the time, a court heard.

After he got clean, Farzad Tavakolipour (54) was left with a €2,000 drug debt and stole petrol from a filling station so he could drive his pregnant girlfriend around.

Judge Bryan Smyth gave him a four-month suspended sentence and fined him €200.

Tavakolipour, of Inverness Road, Fairview, pleaded guilty to possession of methadone for sale or supply, and theft.

Dublin District Court heard gardaí were on patrol at Townsend Street on May 20, 2019 when they saw the accused, who was in a car, interact with another man.

This other man was stopped and found to be in possession of €20 worth of methadone, Garda Sergeant Michelle Lynch said.

When Tavakolipour was searched, empty methadone bottles were found in the driver's side door, along with cash and methadone worth €40.

Tavakolipour became agg- ressive and shouted at the garda in the search.

He also admitted stealing €15 worth of petrol in two drive-offs from the Circle K filling station on Richmond Road, Ballybough, last January 5 and 8.

After getting clean a year ago, the accused was still in significant debt and had stolen only small amounts to drive his pregnant girlfriend around, the defence said.

He had gone back to the petrol station before he was charged and offered to pay, but this was not accepted.
