Eight men due in court following serious assault on teen in Thurles last year

Eight men are due before Thurles District Court this morning in relation to a serious assault on teenager in the town last year.

The eight men, all aged between 18 and 20, have been charged following the incident in June 2021.

Accord to gardai, five men were initially arrested on July 16, 2021, and were released without charge with files being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

A further three men were arrested in July and August 2021. They were also released without charge with files being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

“Following directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions, gardaí have charged eight men all aged 18-20,” gradai said this morning.

“All eight are due to appear before Thurles District Court at 10:30am this morning, Tuesday 26th April 2022.

“Investigations are ongoing.”

Gardai had said at the time that a man, aged in his late teens, was assaulted between the hours of 11pm on Sunday, June 27, 2021, and 12.30am on Monday, June 28, at Upperchurch Village in Thurles, County Tipperary.

He had been taken to Cork University Hospital where he was treated for serious injuries.

Gardaí at Thurles issued an appeal for any witnesses to come forward.
