A MAN found slumped in an intoxicated state outside a maternity hospital tried to strike gardaí when they roused him.

Anthony O'Connell (46) became "highly aggressive" and hurled abuse at officers in front of hospital users as he was arrested in the incident.

Judge Bryan Smyth gave him a three-month suspended sentence at Dublin District Court.

O'Connell, with an address at South Circular Road, Dublin, pleaded guilty to public intoxication, threatening, abusive and insulting behaviour and garda obstruction on February 1 this year.

The court heard gardaí at Parnell Square West found the accused slumped against the wall outside the Rotunda Hospital.

When they tried to rouse him, he became highly aggressive and attempted to strike gardaí. There was a strong smell of alcohol from him and he "couldn't stand on his own two feet", a garda said.

He refused to give his details when asked and was abusive to the gardaí and people attending the hospital.

He continued to be aggressive and abusive as he was arrested and placed into a patrol van.

O'Connell had 160 previous convictions, including 49 for public order offences, the court heard.

The accused had ended up in a coma in hospital and was "basically dying", but had come out of it and had not touched a drop since, his solicitor John Feaheny said.

The judge said O'Connell had a significant number of previous convictions.
