A DRUNKEN man who stumbled into a Garda station, sat down and cried has been fined €200 for public intoxication.

David Mantle (43), who told a garda to "f**k off" in the incident, had pleaded not guilty but failed to appear in Dublin District Court for the hearing of his case.

Mantle, of no fixed address, was convicted and fined in his absence.

Garda Charlotte Donne told Judge Bryan Smyth she took up duty in Store Street garda station on January 13 this year.

Mantle came into the public office, stumbling, and sat down. Gda Donne said when she approached him, Mantle was crying, confused, disorientated and slurring his words.

He refused to give the garda his name and told her to "f**k off", she said.

When she asked again, he gave his name and stumbled when he stood up. She arrested him at 6.47pm and walked him through the public office.

Judge Smyth said he found the facts proved. Mantle had 60 previous convictions and was previously given a suspended sentence, the court heard.

The accused had serious alcohol and drug issues, his defence solicitor said.
