A DRUNKEN father-of-four was arrested for his own safety when he was nearly hit by three cars on a city street.

David Cunningham (44) was fined €200 at Dublin District Court.

Cunningham, a construction worker with an address at a Dublin hostel, pleaded guilty to public intoxication.

The court heard that on September 16, gardaí saw Cunningham intoxicated on Ballymun Road. He crossed the road and was nearly hit by three vehicles.

He could not maintain his balance or communicate properly when gardaí spoke to him, and was falling out on to the road.

At 11.19pm on October 10, gardaí found Cunningham sitting and slumped over on the footpath on a city centre street.

They found he was heavily intoxicated and could not speak properly or stay awake for extended periods of time.

He did not know where he was and was attended to by paramedics, but refused to go to hospital. On August 20, he was arrested after a bus driver on Donnybrook Road called gardaí because Cunningham was intoxicated and asleep on the bus.

The accused was out of work with a hand injury and had alcohol issues, his solicitor Yvonne Bambury said.
