A DANGEROUS driver caught speeding at up to 210kmh on a motorway had "panicked" when he saw gardaí.

Jason Malcolmson (19) accepted his actions had been "incredibly stupid", a court heard before he was banned from driving for two years.

Judge Michael Walsh also fined Malcolmson €500 and said his driving had been "extremely dangerous" and could not be condoned.

The accused, of Thornhill Gardens, Celbridge, Co Kildare, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving. Garda Seamus Fitzgerald told Dublin District Court he was on duty at 3am on March 22 last year when he saw a car being driven at speed in a dangerous manner on the M11 motorway.

The car was travelling from the direction of the city centre toward Shankill and he estimated its speed to be 160kmh.

The car did a U-turn and while it was in a 120kmh zone, it was travelling at speeds between 160kmh and 210kmh.

The accused had no previous convictions.

It was a serious incident and Malcolmson apologised unreservedly, his solicitor Michael French said.

"He panicked when he heard the sirens and saw the lights, and drove at speed. It was an incredibly stupid thing to do," Mr French added.

The court heard the car was seized and scrapped.

The accused worked at a carpentry firm. Mr French asked the judge to treat it as an isolated incident.

"He is a young man with his whole life ahead of him, hopefully this will serve as an eye-opener for him," he said.
