A CROWD of up to 50 people threw milk, water and eggs on gardaí who were trying to subdue a man as he became violent outside his Dublin home, a court has heard.

Aaron McCarthy (28) “egged the crowd on” and called for their help after he had to be pepper-sprayed over his behaviour towards gardaí.

Judge Bryan Smyth said the facts of the case were “pretty appalling” and jailed McCarthy for three months.

The accused, of Crinan Strand, Sheriff Street pleaded guilty to threatening, abusive and insulting behaviour and garda obstruction.

A garda told Dublin District Court he was on duty at Sheriff Street Lower on March 28 last year when he heard McCarthy threatening to beat up an elderly male.

The court heard McCarthy then turned to the garda and said “what are you looking at, f**king rat boy?”

He called the garda a “scumbag” and a “p**sy” and asked if he wanted to fight him.

A woman dragged McCarthy into his home and he continued to shout obscenities.

The next day, he used more obscenities, resisted arrest and a garda had to pepper spray him.

As he struggled on the ground, the crowd poured water and milk on McCarthy, before throwing it at the gardaí. Eggs were also thrown at them.

The crowd included children aged as young as three and McCarthy was “egging them on.” As he was led away, he spat towards gardaí and the patrol car, the court was told.

The accused had became intoxicated over a 24-hour period, his solicitor Edward Bradbury said.
