A courier has been charged over a €122,000 cannabis seizure in Rathfarnham in Dublin.

Kyle Boland, 25, of Isolda Road, in Ringsend, Dublin was arrested on Friday night.

His Ford Transit van was stopped at Dodder Park Road in Rathfarnham by officers from the Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau.

He appeared before Judge Anthony Halpin at a weekend sitting of Dublin District Court.

Detective Garda Stephen Gillespie said the accused made no reply when he was charged with possessing cannabis for sale or supply.

He objected to bail due to the seriousness of the case and possible flight risk. It was alleged that when the van was initially searched, a kilo of cannabis was found. A further search of the vehicle at Tallaght garda station led to another five kilos of the drug.

Detective Garda Stephen Gillespie said the total value was €122,000.

Directions from the DPP are being sought and a more serious charge could be brought, the court heard.

He agreed with defence solicitor Claire Finnegan that a file has not yet been sent to the DPP and that the seizure has still to be analysed.

The detective agreed that the accused could have to wait two years until his trial is heard.

The garda was aware the accused recently resided at a hotel in Dublin, but the court heard that this was because there had been a flood at his home.

Pleading for bail, the solicitor told Judge Halpin her client worked part-time and his girlfriend was expecting a child. He could lodge €2,000, Ms Finnegan said.

Judge Halpin granted bail but sought a cash lodgement of €10,000, after noting that this, coupled with other conditions, allayed Detective Garda Gillespie's fears .

Once taken up the accused must sign on daily at a garda station, be contactable at all times and notify gardai of any change of address.
